Students at Robert Gordon University (RGU) have teamed up to launch an engaging online blog to share their experiences of Aberdeen.
The RGU Student Blog will give existing and prospective students an insight into what it’s like to live and study in the Granite City.
Third year RGU Management with Marketing student Maryam Hussain (22) has led the development of the blog as part of a year-long internship as a digital content assistant with the university’s marketing team.
Maryam heads up a team of bloggers which includes International Business Management student Anastasia Ovchinnikova, who is also an RGU digital content assistant, Valerie Kasaiyian, who is an LLM Oil and Gas Law student, and Lizzy Townsend, a Forensic and Analytic Science student.
The blog gives the students an opportunity to share practical tips, personal experiences and reviews for those interested in applying to RGU, or just looking for new things to do in Aberdeen.
Maryam said: “I’m very proud to have developed the RGU Student Blog and it’s great to see all of our work come together so well.
“It’s becoming increasingly important for universities to speak to prospective students from a student’s perspective as this gives additional credibility to the information they are providing.
“As a student I find the university’s website useful for academic content, but there is a need for an informal way of telling existing and potential students about what’s happening at RGU.
“When students are thinking about applying for university they have a number of questions, and who’s better to answer them than someone that’s been in the exact same situation before?”
Maryam has been working to develop the blog for several months and aims to recruit more bloggers to the editorial team. There is also a guest blog section for those who are interested in posting occasionally.
Maryam said: “We’re publishing lots of content each week to the blog and hope that students and prospective students enjoy what we are writing about from around the North-east and RGU.”
Sean Brosnan, RGU’s digital content manager, has helped oversee development of the blog and is pleased that the site has been launched.
He said: “Social media is an increasingly important way for the university to connect with people who are interested in studying at RGU.
“There are lots of blogs associated with the university but I am not aware of any which showcase the student experience in this way.
“Maryam has done fantastic job setting this up while learning new skills which we hope will be of value to her after she completes her studies.”
