A Robert Gordon University (RGU) researcher has been recognised for making a significant contribution to the world of Artificial Intelligence.
Professor Susan Craw has been announced as a senior member of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), a status designed to recognise AAAI members who have achieved significant accomplishments within the field of Artificial Intelligence.
She is the first researcher at a Scottish university to have been awarded the status, and is only the third UK AAAI senior member since the awards started in 2011.
Prof. Craw, who has a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Aberdeen, has published over 100 peer reviewed papers in international journals and at leading conferences. Her research track record has been established over more than 30 years at RGU, and is now part of RGU’s new Smart Data Technologies Centre.
Prof. Craw said: “It is a great honour for me to have been named as a senior member of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence and I thank the society for recognising my work in this way.
“Artificial Intelligence is a truly exciting area of research and I am delighted to have made a contribution within this field.”
She added: “My research can be described as embedding intelligence into smart information systems. Some examples of my research that highlight its relevance to industry are pharmaceutical product design with AstraZeneca, satellite incident reporting for the European Space Agency, land use planning with The James Hutton Institute, and Oil & Gas `lessons learned’.
“My research is also contributing to the high-tech digital life we all now lead. Recent research using NFC (Near Field Communication) and Bluetooth sensors to enable location-aware interactive information on mobile phones and tablets is designed to make visitors aware of nearby items of interest at an historic site, museum, city, etc.
“We are also working on improving recommendations for online music services. I am giving a talk on our music recommender at IJCAI, the main international AI conference, at the end of July, held in Buenos Aires this year.”
The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence is the international scientific society for AI, established in 1979.
Senior member awards are made to key international academics and industry experts, with a total of 51 made to date.
