RGU: RAG to host annual student fundraising week in Aberdeen

A raft of student fundraising events will take place across the city next week to raise money for a range of charities.

RGU:RAG, the fundraising arm of Robert Gordon University’s (RGU) Students’ Union, is holding its 2015 RAG (raising and giving) Week – a jam packed annual fundraising week to raise money for a number of charities including Cancer Research UK, Marie Carie UK, Mental Health Foundation, Little Princess and the British Heart Foundation.

Kicking off the week is a charity sleepout on Monday, October 26 in aid of Aberdeen Cyrenians which will see students from the university’s Erasmus Student Network (ESN RGU) spend the night sleeping rough in the Union Square car-park to raise money for the local homelessness charity.

The week will also see RGU students brave the freezing North Sea in fancy dress on Saturday, October 31 as they take part in a charity ‘Nippy Dip’ at Aberdeen Beach.

The Garthdee campus is also expected to be filled with students donning their favourite onsies or pyjamas for a £1 donation as part of ‘Onesie Friday’ on Friday, October 30.

The university’s Harry Potter Society is also organising a Halloween themed event on Wednesday, October 28 where it will be offering hair chalk, face-painting and temporary tattoos to transform RGU students into a spooky ‘Dumbledore army’ to raise money for Lumos, a charity founded by JK Rowling that helps to transform the lives of disadvantaged children living in institutions.

Marty McGouran, chair of RGU: RAG, said: “RGU:RAG Week is designed to raise money for a range of chosen charities by encouraging students to get involved in a raft of fun and exciting activities.

“This year we have chosen to support a number of charities so that RGU students can help to make a difference to various worthwhile causes.

“We’ve got our student societies more involved in the week this year and it’s been great to see their engagement, with many organising their own RAG events to support their own chosen charities which has further increased the diversity of the week.

“We have a jam packed schedule of events that offers something for everyone so I hope that lots of students will take part in the week, helping us raise as much money as possible.”

Other events taking place throughout the week is a charity band night at the Tunnels; a Halloween themed bake off to raise money for Childreach International; a gaming night organised by RGU’s Gaming Society to raise funds for Special Effect Charity; and a charity Zumbathon.
