The place of oil and gas in the global energy mix will be explored at a public lecture in Aberdeen next week.
Professor Babs Oyeneyin from Robert Gordon University (RGU)’s School of Engineering will deliver a professorial lecture on Wednesday 26 October, which will examine the gap in demand and supply of oil and gas in the global energy mix and discuss the challenges and opportunities for the industry.
The free lecture, which is entitled ‘Beyond Petroleum?’, is the first in a new series of professorial lectures announced by RGU where a number of its experts discuss topical research issues.
Babs Oyeneyin is a Professor of Petroleum Engineering at RGU specialising in well engineering, sand management and multiphase flow assurance. He is a trained petroleum engineer with a background in mechanical engineering.
He is a champion of integrated petroleum engineering solutions using a hybrid of predictive modelling and case-based reasoning with virtual reality technology for real-time oilfield problem diagnosis and hydrocarbon production optimisation.
Commenting on his lecture Professor Oyeneyin said: “The global energy mix refers to how geographical energy consumption is broken down by primary sources such as fossil fuels, nuclear, waste and renewable energy.
“For each region or country, the composition of the energy mix depends on various factors such as the availability of its usable resources, the possibility of importing, the types of energy needs and the policy choices.
“I will examine the gap in demand and supply of oil and gas in the global energy mix, and discuss the challenges and opportunities for the industry, highlighting a desperate need for game changing technologies to manage the mature fields and explore new frontiers, as well as a sustainable and competent human factor to deliver the goods.
“My lecture will also explore the roles and opportunities for universities in the industry, as professional development and technology providers, and what they need to do to become a key player in the international oil and gas market.”
For more than two decades Professor Oyeneyin has led student-centred joint industry projects with a focus on sand management, produced water and improved hydrocarbon recovery technologies.
He is the founder and chairman of the joint industry Sand Management Network, which brings together upstream oil and gas companies to collaboratively tackle sand management challenges in the North Sea and globally.
His professorial lecture will begin at 6pm in the Sir Ian Wood Building at RGU’s Garthdee campus. There will be an opportunity for questions and answers, which will be followed by light refreshments.
