RGU Events students aim to take fundraising total to £100k

Honours year Event Management students at Robert Gordon University (RGU) are hosting a number of events across the city in a bid to hit a combined fundraising total of £100k for local charities.

12 groups of students from RGU’s Aberdeen Business School are working with 12 different local charities to host the roster of events, including an abseil and a drive-in movie night, to raise much needed funds as part of their final project – The Main Event.

The Main Event, in its third year, has already raised around £70k for local charities and this year’s students want to take that total to £100k.

Each group of students were allocated a charity and had to design an event which does not form part of the charity’s normal events calendar but sticks to their brand and principles.

The students have been working hard to produce an event template to be gifted to their charity alongside the profits, enabling the recipient to run the event in future years.

Events hosted include; a ‘Fairytale Family Fun Day’ raising funds for VSA; a ‘Daffodil Drive-In’ cinema held for Marie Curie; ‘Charlie’s Ultimate Game Show’ raised cash for Charlie House; ‘Dazzled to a Tea’ was held in aid of Archie and a 'Survive the Wild' event for Befriend a Child.

The city has also seen many more student-run events including ; an Easter cake off for Drugs Action; Alice’s Wonderlunch for Aberlour; an abseil challenge from the RGU Library Tower in aid of Cornerstone; an open air cinema night for Inspire and a charity quiz night for Cyrenians.

A Hootenanny for Make a Wish will be held this weekend and the events will round off with ‘Kick It! For Clan’ on Wednesday April 6.

Aaron McIntosh, course leader for Events Management at RGU’s Aberdeen Business School, said: “The Main Event has been a huge success. Our students work tirelessly throughout the year to produce very different and highly successful events.

“The project enables the students to showcase their academic and practical skills while benefitting the charities involved.

“Overall we have raised a massive £70k for local charities and I am confident we will hit the £100k mark with the events this year.

“In addition to the money, the students are raising awareness for the charities in a range of ways such as securing press coverage, finding new supporters for the charities and developing new relationships across the city.”
