Students and staff at Robert Gordon University (RGU) have raised thousands of pounds for prostate and testicular cancer during Movember.
A total 72 students and staff took part in teams and raised £4,792 for research into prostate and testicular cancer, as well as mental health.
The month-long campaign was organised by RGU:RAG, the fundraising arm of the university’s Student Association, and supported by Aramark.
It challenged men to grow a moustache for the 30 days of November, thereby changing their appearance and the face of men’s health.
Females also signed up to Move-ember where they committed to ‘moving’ and completed 30 days of physical activity.
RGU student Marty McGouran (29), chair of RGU:RAG, said: “I’m delighted that we have managed to raise so much money for the Movember campaign this year. RGU has a strong tradition of supporting the charity and this has been our best year yet.
“All of the teams did a great job and I’d especially like to mention the RGU Rugby Club who raised £2,000 towards our total.”
RGU’s Accommodation and Catering Manager Ian Webster took part in Movember and is keen to keep the Mo-mentum going by doing his own ‘Beard December.’
His inspiration for taking part in the campaign is to raise awareness of men’s mental health issues.
He said: “Too many men bottle things up and don’t speak to anyone about how they feel. Growing a moustache is a visible thing and it gets the conversation going, which in turn raises awareness of men’s mental health.
He added: “I am proud to have raised nearly £600 for Movember individually and I hope this total continues to grow throughout beard December. The RGU Movember team has done a great job.”
