Rachel Reeves is expected to back a third runway at Heathrow airport as Labour steps up its plans to boost the economy.

The chancellor is set to announce her support during a speech next week that will declare the government's backing of the expansion.

She is also likely to approve a second runway at Gatwick and greenlight an application that will double the capacity of Luton airport.

Ms Reeves said last week that the Government must go “further, faster in driving economic growth.”

The proposals, which were reported on Bloomberg News, come as part of a wider push to stabalise the economy and attempt to reassure the markets that the UK has plans for growth.

The government said in a statement: “We are determined to get our economy moving and secure the long-term future of the UK’s aviation sector.

“All expansion proposals must demonstrate they contribute to economic growth, which is central to our ‘Plan for Change’, while remaining in line with existing environmental obligations.”
