Record breaking results reinforces tradition of success

The 2016 examination results at all levels from S4 to S6 have been extremely strong with Higher results being the best ever by some margin.

A record third of S5 pupils achieved straight A grades in all five of their Highers, with further record results for A (61%) and A/B (85%) passes.

64 out of 179 (36%) Fourth Year Pupils achieved eight straight A passes at National 5 with 74% A passes overall, 91% of all grades being at A or B and 96% A-C passes. Robert Gordon’s remains committed to offering a breadth of subjects at S4 where pupils take eight subjects at National 5, making this success all the more significant. Nationally the opportunity for pupils to access such a broad base of subjects has become rare. The ability to study a wide range of subjects at S3 and S4 at National 5 remains vital for academic success for pupils as they move up to Higher and Advanced Higher.

The percentage of pupils achieving five As in S5 has continued to grow and this year reached 62 pupils (33%). This summer 74% of Fifth Year Pupils achieved five Highers across 24 different subjects, and 61% of Highers taken were A passes.

Talking about the continuing tradition of academic success at Gordon’s Simon Mills, Head of College confirmed that “Strong Higher results remain the bedrock of academic success for the majority of our pupils, and to see 85% of all S5 Higher grades at Robert Gordon’s being either an A or B grade is a tremendous success. We have strong confidence in the new Scottish National Qualifications which reflect the hard work of staff and pupils. This will help open many key pathways to university and careers ahead. We congratulate all of our pupils who worked so hard to attain success in their SQA examinations this summer.”

The excellent SQA examination results enabled a high level of success from the S6 candidates applying for university entry to a very wide variety of courses and institutions. Sixth Year saw 50% overall A passes at Advanced Higher (77% A-B passes, 91% A-C passes). In recent years 96% of S6 pupils have gone on to higher or further education.

Simon Mills concluded: “The pupils from S4 to S6 have shown once again that hard work, dedication and close partnerships with their teachers and pastoral support network produces examination results to be truly proud of. Our focus on high standards and personal attention to each pupil is the foundation for success. We are delighted for all our pupils and very excited to watch their future development.”

Robert Gordon’s tradition of academic strength and the high quality of the learning and teaching available to pupils was underlined this year by the highly successful inspection report from Her Majesty’s Inspectors of Education. The school aims to equip all of its pupils to fulfill their potential and to empower them to follow the course of their choice at the next stage of their education. There is an outstanding record in enabling young men and women to gain places on their preferred university course.
