A group of primary six pupils from Mile End School in Aberdeen have raised a total of £1052.70 for Maggie’s Aberdeen.
The students held a bake sale and sold daffodils at the school’s performances of ‘Porridge’ on Wednesday and yesterday afternoon to raise funds for the charity, which provides free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their families and friends.
The team at Maggie’s have been working with the pupils over the last two months. The children have received a talk at their assembly to find out more about the charity and the support that it offers. A group of pupils recently visited the centre to see where the funds raised would go and how they would be used to continue supporting the people of the North East.
Mrs Kidd, the pupils teacher, said: “The original request to do ‘something for a cancer charity’ was taken and turned into a bit of a mission. The girls chose Maggie’s as they could see it from school and had wondered what happened in the centre. Initially they had set a target of £50 to raise.”
“Christa Hose, Katie MacIver, Cristiona McDermott- Dick, Amy McPherson, Disha Nandish, Holly Player, Anneka Siegel and Emily Stephen used their persuasive powers to get staff, other pupils, their families and of course me to bake and help out at the sale. Well done girls for such a fantastic effort and the school is very proud of you all.”
Anna Fell, centre fundraising organiser Maggie’s Aberdeen, said: “It is important that we reach out to people of all ages and raise awareness of what we do and how we can support people with cancer. The children have been very willing to learn about Maggie’s and have put a tremendous effort into raising money for the centre.”
Maggie’s Aberdeen relies on voluntary donations to support and grow its network of centres and to develop its unique, high quality programme of support. The charity’s aim is to make the biggest difference possible to people living with cancer and their family and friends.
Susan Sutherland, centre head at Maggie’s Aberdeen, said: “We are delighted that the pupils of Mile End School had such a successful afternoon and raised money for our centre here in Aberdeen. The funds raised will help us to continue giving our valuable support to our visitors at the centre.”
