A total of 28 Aberdeen teachers will take part in an intensive training programme in the French language to support the provision of high quality language teaching in schools.
Members of the Finance, Policy and Resources Committee agreed to accept grant funding for the project from the UK National Agency.
The immersion course, which will take place during the summer holidays at no cost to Aberdeen City Council, will take place in France and will allow primary teachers who have limited language skills to secure the skills needed to deliver the 1+2 Modern Languages Scottish Government Initiative.
Aberdeen City Council finance, policy and resources committee convener Councillor Douglas Lumsden said: “All teachers now have a responsibility to deliver a language and this is a fantastic opportunity for them to acquire the knowledge to teach lessons confidently.
“In addition, the course will allow teachers to gain further knowledge of the French daily life and culture.
“As we live in a globalised society, it is important we can offer our children the opportunity to speak additional languages at a young age and we need to support our teachers to deliver this.”
