Students from NESCOL’s (North East Scotland College) Girls into Energy course were welcomed to Peterhead Power Station to hear about SSE Thermal’s role in the energy industry and career paths in the sector.

Project site engineer, Ben Dickson, gave a tour of the station and explained how it operates. This was followed by a talk from community liaison officer Karen Watt, chemist Gwen Stewart, and apprentices Jenny Hemmings and Catriona Raffan.

Girls into Energy is open to girls aged from 14 to 17 years who are interested in the energy sector. The course is a mix of classroom study, industry visits and workshops, and on completion, students are awarded a recognised SQA National Qualification.

Karen Watt, community liaison officer at SSE Thermal, said: “The students were a great group who were interested and engaging – not only answering questions from the project site engineer but also asking their own questions.

“They will now have a good understanding of the range of employment opportunities available at Peterhead Power Station and other SSE Thermal locations. It’s an exciting time to be involved in the energy sector and I wish the girls well for the remainder of their course.”
