The high-quality show of exhibition cattle, suitable for future showing, met a strong trade at the Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ 25th annual Clydesdale Bank-sponsored Spectacular show and sale at Thainstone Centre, Inverurie on Friday 26th August.
John Angus, auctioneer and store cattle manager at Aberdeen & Northern Marts, said: “The Spectacular attracted top-quality animals with a great ringside of buyers looking for cattle to feature in the upcoming show and sale competitions, resulting in a strong trading day here at Thainstone Centre.
“We are very pleased with the results of today’s show and sale and would like to congratulate everyone on their accomplishments achieved on the day.”
The top price of £4,600 was paid by K D Harryman, Keskadale, Newlands, Keswick for an 11-month-old Limousin cross heifer, weighing 525kg, from J Munro & Son, Invercharron, Ardgay, which won the reserve champion title in the haltered heifer born in 2015 category. The prized animal - by ‘Diablo’ – cleverly named ‘Kiss My…!’ dominated the North Circuit this year winning Grantown, Nairn, Dornoch, Latheron, and Caithness County shows, and was first in class in all other competitions.
The overall champion – selected by show judge Bob Kingston, The Crown Inn, Somerset – was a 12-month-old Limousin heifer, weighing 450kg, from S Fotheringham, Ballinloan, Dunkeld, which sold for £3,800 to P Sellers Thrope Tilney Farm, Thorpe Tilney, Lincoln. The heifer also came in first place in the haltered heifer born in 2015 category, was named champion in the haltered heifer section and received the champion title in the animal born in 2015 category. Earlier this year, the heifer was named the champion calf of the Perth Show.
A 10-month-old Limousin cross steer, weighing 433kg, from J A Morrison & Son, Newtack, Grange, won the champion bullock section for animals born in 2015 and achieved £1,550 selling to B T Kitson Bu 25 South Side, Hutton, Rudby Farm.
A seven-month-old Limousin cross steer, weighing 298kg, from J Robertson & Co, Newton of Logierait, Pitlochry was named champion in the haltered bullock born in 2016 category.
R W Cameron & Son’s, Wester Bonhard, Scone, five-month-old Limousin cross steer, weighing 266kg, claimed the champion heifer born in 2016 category and achieved an outstanding £2,000 selling to Martin Barker, Middlebank End Farm, Appleby, Cumbria.
Mr R Hood, Middlehill Farm, Glen Clova, sold his 14-month-old British Blue cross heifer at £3,400 to a noted showman B Duffton, 2 Bogie Street, Huntly.
From Orkney, ‘Wendy’, a five-month-old, Limousin cross heifer by ‘Goldies Idol’, from J S Baillie & Co, Sebay, Farm Tankerness, achieved the title of cross-bred overall champion at the Orkney County Show earlier this year and realised £3,000 at today’s Spectacular selling to D Morrison Cairn, Nulla, Kinlochbervie.
Balfour Baillie’s, Sebay Cottage, Tankerness, Limousin cross heifer, weighing 295kg, stood second in its class and sold to Dunbeath Farm, Dunbeath, for £3,000.
The Charolais Society Prize winner was awarded to G Hendry, Head Auchinderran, Keith, for his seven-month-old Charolais cross heifer selling to Jessop & Mcbeath, Castleton Farm, Airth, for £2,800.
The overall champion consignor Stuart Fotheringham also sold at £2,800 for his Charolais heifer to S Bett, Castleton Farm, Airth.
Following the top price of the day, J Munro & Son, Invercharron, Ardgay, sold his 16-month-old British Blue cross steer named ‘Tank’, weighing 560kg, for £2,500 to Miller Farms. Mid Lurg, Midmar, Inverurie.
Selling for the same price of £2,500 was J Robertson & Co, Newton of Logierait, Pitlochry, for his first prize Limousin cross steer to B S Paton, Knachly, Kirriemuir.
Heifers sold to £4,600 to average 528.5p/kg and £2,047.02/head for 24 head, compared with 467.3p/kg and £2054.35/head for 26 head from last year. Bullocks sold the top of £2,500 twice during the sale at 406.31p/kg and 1,396.36 per head against 362.8p/kg and £1,640 per head from last year.
