A new digital training resource is set to support organisations as they seek to improve attitudes and awareness regarding workplace incidents.
The Key Learning platform has been developed by incident investigation specialists Matrix Risk Control (Matrix) with support from Scottish Enterprise. It represents a six-figure investment for the company and is believed to be the first online learning facility dedicated to incident investigation.
The content of the Key Learning modules is based on Matrix’s IOSH-approved incident investigation classroom programme and is delivered in an interactive, digital format. The modules are designed to be both flexible and secure for learners, while allowing employers to side-step the commercial and environmental costs associated with traditional classroom courses, such as travel, accommodation and time away from the workplace.
It is hoped that the modules, which are available in five languages and can be translated into others as required, will be particularly appealing for organisations that wish to train employees across multiple locations to a consistent, high standard. The ability to access learning programs at any time or location is also likely to suit those who work offshore or remotely.
The launch of Key Learning was preceded by 18 months of product development to ensure the effectiveness of the modules from both the learner’s and employer’s point of view. The online incident investigation course incorporates selectable case studies to ensure training is relevant to the learner’s work environment. Short interactive activities encourage engagement, while a final examination provides both parties with a record of attainment.
John Richardson, project manager, Matrix Risk Control said: “The Key Learning platform was developed following a detailed market research exercise, which revealed that there was both a desire and a need for online training to develop internal incident investigation skills.
“A robust approach to incident recording and investigation is crucial if companies are to reduce their risks of major incidents. Notably, almost all such crises are preceded by a series of minor incidents or near misses.
“We recognise that training and development is a significant investment in terms of both time and money. Key Learning therefore offers companies the chance to train a greater number of their staff to the same professional standard, while reducing the outlays associated with attending traditional classroom courses.”
Matrix Risk Control was established by former senior police officers in 2009. The company, which is headquartered in Aberdeen, provides training and support services to help organisations manage many major forms of operational risk. Its 15-strong team conducts independent investigations worldwide and works across a variety of industry sectors to provide incident investigation training courses and management services.
