North-east businesspeople attended an informative and engaging event to understand how local firms can prepare for new Scottish Government legislation.
The session featured a presentation from Ross Skene, waste and recycling specialist at One Stop Waste Solutions, who shed light on practical steps companies can take to ensure compliance ahead of the landfill ban, due to come into effect at the end of 2025.
Held at Fountainhall Church in the west end of Aberdeen, the event showcased the growing commitment of local businesses to increased sustainability, while Ross provided a comprehensive overview of the evolving waste management landscape by focusing on:
- Preparing for the landfill ban
- Reducing businesses’ carbon footprint
- Managing food waste and waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE)
Positive feedback from attendees underlined the event’s value in helping businesses understand the financial and environmental benefits of better waste management practices.
With the landfill ban deadline approaching, One Stop Waste Solutions is encouraging businesses to act now by offering tailored advice and services to help improve their waste management systems, reduce costs, and stay compliant with evolving regulations.
Ross Skene commented: "It was fantastic to see so much engagement and interest from the attendees. Our goal was to not only provide valuable insights but to inspire action.
“Hearing how businesses are already identifying opportunities to improve their waste management practices and embrace sustainability is incredibly rewarding. Together, we can work towards reducing waste, cutting costs, and building a more sustainable future."
The landfill ban is designed to help transition Scotland towards a circular economy and meet the targets set out in the Zero Waste Plan by barring all commercial ‘black bag’ and general household waste from landfill.
This means that, from December 31, 2025, biodegradable municipal waste, such as food, garden waste, paper and cardboard, needs to be directed towards alternative treatments that can help extract any remaining resource value from residual general waste.
Established in 2006, One Stop Waste Solutions provides advice and recycling solutions to businesses and organisations across the north-east of Scotland; helping them to manage their waste effectively, recycle, and reduce costs.
