Employers in the oil and gas sector are to be given advice to help them retain employees at a free event in Aberdeen.
Organised by Skills Development Scotland (SDS) and the CIPD, the professional body for HR and people development, two ‘Alternatives to Redundancy’ half-day seminars will take place on Friday, September 4.
Calum Maclean, Employer Services Manager at SDS, said: “A number of employers in the oil and gas industry are considering redundancies that may take essential skills away from their business and affect their ability to grow.
“The Alternatives to Redundancy seminars will give employers in the oil and gas sector the opportunity to understand and explore other options that would help to retain essential skills.
“Whether they are looking to restructure or maintain their current workforce, we can discuss the support available and help them to plan for the future.
“However, we also recognise that, in some cases, redundancies are unavoidable so we will also be helping employers prepare for that situation.”
Delivered by CIPD’s Head of Scotland, Dr John McGurk, and Employment Law specialist, John Lee, the seminar will cover current legislation concerning redundancy, alternatives such as shortened hours and pay freezes or adjustments, career coaching to help staff prepare to move to internal vacancies, and support for employees to develop their career.
Dr John McGurk, Head of Scotland, CIPD said: “The financial crisis has taught us that there are credible alternatives to redundancy that can keep people in work and keep businesses going.
“Through agile working practices and evolved ambitions, businesses can retain key skills and not just survive but thrive in the long-term. However, when redundancies must happen, it’s important that businesses handle them in the right way, for the individuals directly affected and the wider workforce.”
