Nuart Aberdeen street art festival wins national award

Aberdeen’s first international street art festival has scooped a national award following an online vote by members of the public and an expert panel.

Leading business organisation Aberdeen Inspired clinched the place management BID award for the Nuart Aberdeen street art festival at the 2017 National Business Improvement District (BID) Awards.

The awards were organised by British BIDs, the governing body of Business Improvement Districts across the country, and the winning project was announced on Thursday, October 19 at The National BIDs conference in Cambridge.

The Nuart Aberdeen festival, which was held over the Easter weekend, was up against five other BIDs in the category.

A team of internationally acclaimed artists showcased their talents by creating eye-catching murals on walls around the city centre which attracted large crowds to Aberdeen city centre.

Nuart Aberdeen was brought to the city by business organisation Aberdeen Inspired and Aberdeen City Council, and was supported by main sponsor Burness Paull LLP.

Voting for the award was open to the public through an online vote to accompany the decision of an expert panel.

Nuart Aberdeen has already won three awards, the UK Association of Town and City Management’s Innovation Award which was awarded in June, the Visit Scotland Award for Tourism and was instrumental in securing the 2017 European BID of the Year win in July.

Adrian Watson, chief executive of Aberdeen Inspired, said: “We’re absolutely delighted that Nuart Aberdeen has been recognised with another national award against strong competition from across the UK.

“The festival was very successful and sparked a huge amount of interest in the city with large crowds coming to the centre to see the street art throughout the year.

“The winner of the award was partly determined by public vote which is particularly pleasing and another indication that the festival has made an impact with people in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and further afield.”

Aberdeen Inspired is the banner under which the Aberdeen BID operates. It is a business-led initiative within the city centre in which levy payers within the BID zone contribute.

Proceeds are used to fund projects designed to improve the business district. More information about Aberdeen Inspired is available online at: www.aberdeeninspired.com
