Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar has criticised the government's response to the Grangemouth oil refinery closure and said there has been "nowhere near enough progress".

Owner Petroineos is expected to close the site, which is Scotland's only oil refinery, by the summer with with 400 job losses in the process.

And Mr Sarwar has now said the response to the closure and support for affected workers was "not good enough".

However, the BBC reports, the Scottish Labour leader highlighted that his colleagues in the UK government were "looking robustly" at what can be done to support the site.

During the general election campaign, Mr Sarwar vowed that, if his party won the UK election, it would "step in to save the jobs" at Grangemouth.

But speaking to BBC Scotland News on Monday, he said: "Where we are right now is not good enough.

"We need to see more progress and we need to see a stronger response going into the future."

Mr Sarwar called for a "just transition" and increased investment in the area and said he was putting his case "very forcefully" to the prime minister and other Labour ministers.

He added: "Where we are right now there has been some progress, but nowhere near enough progress and I keep pressing that case."
