The North Sea Transition Taskforce, led by former Permanent Secretary in the UK Government Philip Rycroft, met in Aberdeen this week to reflect on research and discuss its next steps.

The independent taskforce, the idea for which was put forward by Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce in November 2023, was set up to map out and orderly transition to secure the long-term future of the North Sea and safeguard tens of thousands of jobs.

And this was followed up by the publication of a whitepaper on the topic launched at the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool in September.

The group pulls together the expertise of supply chain businesses, unions, environmental groups, and energy policy experts to deliver the widest possible consensus on the right way forward to enable the UK to grasp the opportunity of taking a leadership position in this space.

During the meeting on Monday, team members discussed a range of developments on the subject, reviewed next steps and reflected on the findings of a range of stakeholder interviews and primary research data.

During the day, they also visited Aberdeen South Harbour, ETZ Ltd, D2Zero and High Performance Robotics to hear about the opportunities - and many challenges - faced by the region's world class supply chain as it wrestles with the challenges of moving towards a cleaner energy future.
