North-east schools awards now open for entry

Hundreds of pupils across the north-east are expected to take part in a popular annual awards programme dedicated to the memory of Anne Frank.

Entries are now open for the GREC Anne Frank Awards 2016. The long running event, organised by Grampian Regional Equality Council, celebrates diversity, equality and human rights.

Primary schools, secondary schools and community groups from across Aberdeen city and shire, and Moray have until Friday, May 13 to submit their completed projects.

The ceremony will take place at Cineworld Union Square, on Friday, June 10 (2016) and is scheduled to begin at 10.30am. In addition, all participating pupils will receive a certificate for their efforts. A selection of pupils and schools will be asked to present their works at the awards event.

The awards are once again being supported by Aberdeen-based office cleaning and facilities management specialist, CSG.

The GREC Anne Frank Awards is an initiative encouraging schools to salute the moral courage of just one of millions who suffered as a result of Nazi persecution of Jewish people.

Anne Frank and her family spent two years hiding in Amsterdam, before being discovered and deported to concentration camps. Anne died in Bergen-Belsen camp, Germany, aged just 15-years old.

Adriana Sokolowska, Promoting Respect project worker at GREC, said: “We’re thoroughly looking forward to this year’s GREC Anne Frank Awards. Early intervention, including work with young people, is a very important part of our work and these Awards are a great example of this.”

GREC General Manager Dave Black added, “We’d like to thank our long-running sponsors CSG for their continued support which has played a major role in the success of the awards over the years.”

Alan Merchant, chairman of CSG, said: “This awards scheme is an extremely worthwhile initiative and we are delighted to continue our long-standing association with the event.

“It provides a platform for to demonstrate their fine work promoting diversity, equality and human rights, as well as playing an important role in helping schoolchildren develop vital soft skills including communication and teamwork.”

There are many ways in which schools can take part. Pupils may be involved in the celebration of events and anniversaries or the production of artwork, poetry, drama, and short films. Previously project work; PowerPoint, comic strips and songs have all been presented.
