North-east charities have last remaining places for popular 10k run

Keen runners still looking to take part in this year’s Run Garioch 10k are being urged to contact the event’s official charity partners, as organisers announce the race, along with the 5k and junior run, has sold out.

More than 3000 participants have already signed up for the popular sporting event on Sunday, March 20, with around 1100 taking part in the 10k race, making the sporting occasion the biggest in its history.

There are still a limited number of Dandara 10k places available through each of the official charity partners, Aberdeen Cyrenians, Aberdeen FC Community Trust, Inspire Partnership, Clan, Cash For Kids and Befriend a Child with Charlie House offering places in the Junior Run.

This is the first time the race organisers have assigned official charities for the event and it’s hoped the move will raise awareness of the organisations and boost funds, with the charities in turn providing support by fulfilling volunteer roles on the day and assisting with the development of the event village.

Race director Eric Simpson said: “This year’s Run Garioch event is more popular than ever, so we are thrilled that our official charity partners are able to offer runners the chance to sign up to races that have already sold out on our website.

“The seven charities that we’re working with are all extremely active in the north-east, helping thousands of individuals in our area. So we don’t think it will be long before each of these spaces are snapped up, giving people the chance to run the race for a cause close to their hearts.”

Award-winning housebuilder Dandara is proudly supporting the 10k once again, which will have a new and improved route for 2016. Following feedback from runners, the 10k will share the final few kilometres with the 5k and half marathon routes, finishing on Burghmuir Drive.

This year the female and male winners of the 10k will be awarded £100, with second and third place runners receiving £75 and £25 respectively and there will be a further £25 prize for the AB51 fastest runner. In addition there will be also be trophies for the fastest team of four taking part in the 10k local business challenge, the fastest secondary-school team and the fastest secondary school male and female runners.

Dandara\'s sales manager in Aberdeen, Peter Best, said: “Run Garioch is a fantastic event which brings together runners of all ages and abilities to support a number of great causes in the north east.

“It’s extremely encouraging to see so many people signing up to take part in the 10k, with even more people been given the chance to do so with the official charity partners. The Dandara team are already in training and look forward to taking on the track on Sunday March, 20, 2016.”

Garioch Sports Trust, the registered charity formed in 1990 to manage the Garioch Sports Centre and encourage local residents to develop an interest in sporting activities and exercise, organises the event.

All funds raised by Run Garioch support the Garioch Sports Trust in providing sporting facilities and opportunities for the people for Aberdeenshire. Funds from previous events have supported the construction of a world-class 3G football pitch, and thanks to support from last year’s 10th anniversary event the organisation was able to fund the launch of a new website.
