Six new Deputy Lieutenants have been commissioned at a ceremony conducted by Aberdeen’s Lord-Lieutenant, Dr David Cameron.
Deputy Lieutenants are appointed by the Lord-Lieutenant to voluntarily carry out public duties on his behalf. The Lord-Lieutenant is His Majesty The King’s representative in the city of Aberdeen.
The newly commissioned Deputy Lieutenants are Mr Myles Edwards, Mr Graeme Kinghorn, Mrs Morven Mackenzie, Mr Ian Ord, Mrs Rita Stephen and Dr Hector Williams.
The selection process, which was led by the Lord-Lieutenant, identified individuals from different business sectors in the city, such as the energy industry, third sector organisations, hospitality, health and education. Following a two-stage interview process, the chosen names were sent to His Majesty The King, who responded indicating that he did not disapprove, as is the official process.
Aberdeen Lord-Lieutenant, Dr David Cameron said: “I am delighted to commission these six remarkable citizens as new Deputy Lieutenants of the city of Aberdeen. Each one of them has given significant contributions to their respective industries, and has undertaken charitable endeavours over many years, which has ultimately resulted in great benefit to our city and its citizens.
“I have every faith that each one of them will represent myself and the city of Aberdeen with great dignity and enthusiasm and I wish them all my warmest congratulations on their appointments.”
Those appointed at yesterday’s ceremony join the existing group of Deputy Lieutenants. Their duties are:
- to act as the Lord-Lieutenant’s “eyes and ears” throughout the Lieutenancy;
- to commend candidates for invitation to a Royal Garden Party and to suggest suitable enterprises, both voluntary and professional, which might be the subject of a Royal visit;
- to comment on certain honours nominations;
- to encourage applications for The King’s Awards for Enterprise and The King’s Award for Voluntary Service and to assess nominations as required;
- to participate in citizenship ceremonies, when requested by the Lord-Lieutenant.
Aberdeen’s existing Deputy Lieutenants are: Avril Gray DL, Graham Guyan DL, Isabel McIntyre DL, Mike Melvin DL, Gillian Milne DL, Philip Mundie DL, Margaret Openshaw DL and William Young DL.
