Murtle Market has been chosen by bp Coast2Coast riders to receive a share of their fundraising as they cycle from Dumbarton to Aberdeen.
The sustainable shop, café, and heritage hub acts as a social enterprise developing skills, meaningful work opportunities and is a place of authenticity for children and young adults with learning disabilities and complex additional support needs.
The newly opened store, based on North Deeside Road sells local and seasonal produce, as well as having a refilling scheme for dried food and environmentally friendly cleaning products.
This will be the 16th gruelling Coast2Coast cycle that has been completed by brave volunteer riders from both BP and the local area. Raising an amazing £2million for local good causes.
Each cyclist has a fundraising target of £1,000 with participants able to nominate a charity to benefit from the amount raised. All fundraising money raised by bp employees is matched by the bp Foundation – doubling the value of any contributions.
Nicolas Nino-Ramirez, Sustainable Development & Social Enterprise Lead at Murtle Market said “I started joining Coast to Coast 8 years ago, it just seemed a great thing to do! Work on your fitness while supporting local charities, what is not to like?
“Besides, the views Scotland has provided us with over the years setting off from very remote locations have been a privilege. With time the challenges have grown bigger and, in equal measure, the impact Coast to Coast support has had on very worthy causes.”
He continued, “In this opportunity, I am delighted Murtle Market has been selected for Coast to Coast. This is a project I’ve been involved with from the start, it is a social enterprise that sits at the west of Aberdeen City creating meaningful experiences for skills development and also aims to support cultural transformation in the local area for a more sustainable lifestyle. It will certainly be a special one!”
Funds raised will go towards covering staff costs at Murtle Market, securing the early success of the enterprise and supporting the expansion of vocational and employment pathways for young people. Murtle Market also aims to provide bike servicing and repairs in the near future and is already very bike friendly being so close to the Deeside Line. This support will bring that vision one pedal closer.
The Coast2Coast cycle will also raise funds for Simpsons Special Care Babies, The Russell Anderson Foundation and The Teddy Bear Development Playgroup.
We are hugely grateful for the support of Coast2Coast and look forward to serving them coffees, teas and traybakes as they undertake their training rides to prepare for the challenge ahead of them.
