Muir Mhòr offshore wind farm, will be one of the world’s first commercially viable floating offshore wind projects.
Having been awarded seabed rights in the January 2022 ScotWind auction, the project is currently within the early development phase and is on track to start generating energy in the early 2030s.
Ecological and environmental survey work is underway both onshore and offshore, and the Project is working closely with communities in the North-east.
Muir Mhòr, which means ‘Great Sea’ in Gaelic, is a 50/50 joint venture between Fred Olsen Seawind and Vattenfall, two companies with decades of experience and a long-established track record across Scotland.
Located in the deep waters off the Aberdeenshire coast, approximately 63 kilometres from Peterhead, the site’s deep water conditions are well-suited to floating turbine technology, and its location and size allow for efficient project delivery – utilising nearby ports and mobilising the strong marine supply chain on the east coast of Scotland.
Muir Mhòr will create a significant number of jobs, specifically during the construction, and operation and maintenance phases. The Project fully committed to building a supply chain that will provide a multimillion-pound boost to the local economy, with £6.3million already awarded Scottish contracts.
As part of the lease agreement with Crown Estate Scotland, there is a legally binding commitment to the local supply chain. Muir Mhòr is actively inviting all industry suppliers, both large and small, to register and be a part of their project.
