MPs and MSPs will hear about the importance of the shipping industry to Scotland and the UK as a whole at a seminar to be held in Aberdeen on Tuesday (Aug 8).

The Introduction to Shipping event is being held at Pinsent Masons’ Queens Road office and will be presented by members of the UK Chamber of Shipping.

Topics to be discussed include regulation, governance, crewing, global maritime standards, health and safety at sea, and employment law for seafarers.

Pinsent Masons partner and maritime law specialist Bruce Craig said: “Without a strong shipping industry UK commerce would grind to a halt and our balance of payments would be severely impacted. It is encouraging that our elected politicians are taking a close interest in the challenges facing the industry now and in the years ahead post Brexit.”

Guy Platten, CEO of the UK Chamber of Shipping, said: “Scotland is a maritime nation through and through. It has a rich maritime heritage and an exciting future. It is vital that our politicians understand the importance of the shipping industry, so that they can support us and our workforce in creating an environment where investment and job creation can flourish. That is what this ‘Introduction to Shipping’ course is about, and we are delighted to be running it with Pinsent Masons.”
