Aberdeen City Council Chief Executive Angela Scott is to write to the Scottish Police Authority and the Chief Constable of Police Scotland reiterating the local authority’s opposition to create a single division in the North-east from the existing Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire and Moray divisions.
A motion about the issue was agreed by councillors in the City Council’s Urgent Business Committee today.
The motion instructs the Chief Executive to include a request in the letter that the SPA and the Chief Constable of Police Scotland attend a meeting of the Urgent Business Committee at their earliest convenience to fully discuss the issue in public.
The motion further instructs the City Council’s Head of Legal and Democratic Services to seek an opinion on a judicial review of the decision by the SPA and or the Chief Constable of Police Scotland. The Head of Legal and Democratic Services will then report back to Council Leader Jenny Laing on whether there is potential of a successful challenge to the decision to create a single division in the north-east.
The Council Leader will then determine if a further Urgent Business Committee meeting is required.
Urgent Business Committee convener Jenny Laing said: “We welcome the decision by the committee as we have concerns over the proposed merger for the existing divisions.
“I’m happy the Chief Executive is going to write to the SPA and the Chief Constable of Police Scotland about the issue.”
