Germany's conservatives celebrate, but far right enjoy record result
Friedrich Merz's conservatives have won Germany's election, well ahead of rival parties but short of the 30% vote-share they had expected.
"Let's celebrate tonight and in the morning we'll get to work," he told cheering supporters. He said he was "aware of the responsibility that now lies ahead" of him.
The other winner was the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), who are celebrating a record second-place result of 20.8%.

Lazy Gen Z lead revival of the travel agents
Gen Z are leading a revival of the high street travel agent because they regard booking a holiday via an app or website as too time-consuming, the boss of TUI has said.
Sebastian Ebel, the chief executive of the travel giant, said younger people are also increasingly searching for authenticity when booking their getaway, something which can be a risk when researching holidays on social media apps such as Instagram and TikTok.
He said: “We’re seeing them [young people] turn back to the shop. They want to have an extra half hour for gaming instead of looking through the internet."
Average salary cited in job ads hits a record £40,846
Intense competition for workers in manufacturing, maintenance and retail drove advertised salaries in Britain to a record high last month, new figures suggest.
The average advertised salary in the UK stood at £40,846 in January, up 7.02% compared with the same month last year, according to the job search engine Adzuna.
Andrew Hunter, the co-founder of Adzuna, said: “Average advertised salaries continued to surge in January, outstripping inflation as they approach £41,000 — a record high since we started tracking the UK job market in 2016.”
BMW delays electric Mini over 'uncertainty'
BMW has confirmed it is delaying the reintroduction of electric vehicle production at its Oxford Mini plant.
The vehicle manufacturer said "multiple uncertainties facing the automotive industry" had led to its decision decision to pause work on the £600million upgrade of its plant in Cowley.
It said it had decided not to accept a related £60million grant from the government but remained in "close dialogue".
Australian soap Neighbours cancelled (again)
Neighbours has been axed for a second time, just two years after Amazon threw the Australian soap a lifeline.

It is the second time the show has been cancelled, after it was first axed by Channel 5 in the UK after it failed to secure new funding.
