Charles Michies Pharmacy is excited to share its programme for a new ‘Aberdeen Talks’ series.
The talks take place in the cafe of its Union Street branch in the West End of the city and relate to local interest topics in Aberdeen.
Speakers include architects, authors, historians, academics and librarians, all of whom are working towards the same aim of exploring the city’s rich social, cultural and built heritage.
But why is a pharmacy organising talks about the history of the city? The Aberdeen Talks series is part of a wider project being undertaken by Michies to engage with arts and heritage as a means of improving mental health and wellbeing.
As a family-owned and run pharmacists in the city for the last 100 years, looking after the local community has been at the heart of everything it has done over the last century.
Lynne Clark, communications and events lead for Michies, said: “Providing opportunities to participate in arts and culture has long been shown to have a positive impact on the mental health and wellbeing of individuals, including improving self-esteem, developing confidence and reducing social isolation.”
To this end, Michies is also developing other events to go alongside its talk series, including creative writing workshops and walking tours.
The event series is also key in the drive to regenerate Aberdeen’s high street, encouraging people to engage with local history on their doorstep and thereby explore the vast amount the city also has to offer in terms of retailers, restaurants, cafes and entertainment.
Rosemary Michie said: “These events are part of a wider drive to encourage people to engage not only with Aberdeen’s rich past, but with its equally rich present. We are very excited for all the events we are planning and are delighted to welcome Lynne Clark to the team to spearhead the programme.”
