North-east joinery and construction services company Maskame & Tait Ltd has announced its commitment to developing the young workforce, continuing to support the next generation of apprentices and investing in the future of the local industry.
Maskame & Tait Ltd, based in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, provides reactive maintenance and construction project works across a variety of sectors for energy industry, commercial, housing, public and third sectors for several high-profile clients.
The company currently has seven apprentices and continues to develop its former apprentices through its career paths within the fast-growing company as it continues to grow its commercial client lists and spread its services across the whole of North-east Scotland.
Company director Scott Maskame highlighted the importance of its commitment to ensuring the industry and its business are sustainable long-term whilst providing employment for local people well into the future.
He said: “Apprentices are integral to our team, and their contributions are essential to our operations.
"Having started life as a joinery partnership by David Tait and my father Gary Maskame in 1991, we have been working away quietly building the company behind the scenes.
"While we are a forward-thinking business, we are also deeply aware of our heritage - our premises have housed a joinery workshop for over 120 years. It’s our responsibility to preserve that tradition while driving the business forward for future generations.”
Having expanded on its joinery apprenticeship route offering, the company now also delivers painting and decorating apprenticeships in addition to its office-based Business Modern Apprenticeships.
Maskame & Tait has built long-lasting partnerships with CITB , North East Scotland College and its learning partners at Peterhead Academy to provide clear progression routes from school right through to completion of the apprenticeships and beyond.
By fostering strong partnerships with educational institutions and industry bodies, Maskame & Tait Ltd ensures that apprentices receive high-quality training while gaining hands-on experience in a fast-growing business. The company’s focus on internal development has resulted in many apprentices staying on as full-time employees and progressing into senior roles.
A testament to success
One of the company’s current apprentices, Taylor McGruther, shared her experience.
She said: "Joining Maskame & Tait Ltd as an apprentice was the best decision I made for my career. The support and training I received helped me build my skills, and now I’m progressing further within my role in company. It’s great to be part of a team that values development and long-term career growth."
Another former apprentice, Harrison Strachan has also completed further training beyond his apprenticeship and recently completed site supervisor accreditation. He was recently involved in delivering a class-based course at Peterhead Academy where Maskame & Tait helped the pupils build planters from scratch over an entire term which were then donated to local groups, schools and care homes.
He said: “We worked with 3rd year pupils across a full term, developing skills using real tools used by our guys on site daily. This gives them a better insight into modern ways of working on the tools which they never had access to before.”
The company is now accepting applications in each of these areas as it looks to grow its team further. Young people interested in a rewarding career with a forward-thinking company are encouraged to apply.
