The UK data watchdog has launched a "major investigation" into TikTok's use of children's personal information.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) will inspect the way in which social media platforms use the data of 13 to 17-year-olds to recommend further content to them.

John Edwards, the Information Commissioner, said it would look at whether TikTok's data collection practices could lead to children experiencing harms, such as data being leaked or spending "more time than is healthy" on the platform.

The news comes after Microsoft announced the closure of a major communication platform which had hundreds of millions of users during its peak.

The tech giant will close its popular video-calling service Skype in May.

The platform was once one of the world's most popular websites and allowed its users to make voice calls via their computer all over the world for free.

Skype was first released in 2003 and was bought by the tech giant in 2011 for $8.5billion (£6.1billion) - its largest acquisition at the time.

FTSE 100

The UK's flagship share index, the FTSE 100, was up 125-points at 8,844 shortly after opening this morning.

Brent crude oil futures were up 0.42%, trading at $72.93 a barrel.
