Lord Mandelson, Britain's new ambassador to the US, is reportedly lining up Reform leader Nigel Farage to assist in bolstering relations with Donald Trump.
The pair could work together in dialog with the president-elect in a bid to smooth relations over tariffs.
It comes as Labour figures voiced concerns about such a move potentially "elevating" the cause of right-wing politicians.
The Telegraph reports a source close to Mandelson told it: “I am sure that would be a view held by some but not those who need to conduct UK-US relations in the most optimum way.”
In a Times podcast last month, Lord Mandelson urged the government to "swallow your pride" and not to "ignore" Farage in seeking to boost relations with Trump and influential figures like Elon Musk.
Farage confirmed to the Telegraph that he would be "happy" to act as a link between Lord Mandelson and Trump and Musk if it benefited the UK.
He said: "Our relationship with the USA is by far our most important. If it helped the national interest I would be happy to act as a bridge.”
