Robert Gordon University (RGU) will host a variety of events as part of a national celebration of science this month.
Alongside a number of partners in the north-east, RGU will host a series of workshops during British Science Week, giving people the opportunity to operate an ROV, get to grips with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and learn about new materials and their composites.
On Saturday, March 12, choose from two hour long tours at RGU’s School of Engineering which are aimed at school pupils from P4 to S6.
The first, run by Dr. Graeme Dunbar, will focus on underwater robots and how remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) benefit the oil and gas industry.
The second, led by Dr. James Njuguna, will investigate nanotechnology and how new materials are manufactured. Participants are encouraged to bring along a few bottle caps to shred and make into something new during the session.
Also on March 12, the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment will host a drop-in session between 10am and 3pm exploring GIS software and how it can be used to make maps and tell stories.
On Wednesday, March 16, the School of Engineering will open its doors for schools wishing to find out more about the work which goes on at the university and meet researchers.
Dr. Njuguna said: “We are delighted to be taking part in British Science Week once again and to have the opportunity to get the public involved in the wide range of exciting work which goes on at RGU.
“The events are suitable for a range of ages and I would welcome anyone who would like to find out more to get in touch.”
Each March the Aberdeen branch of British Science Association hosts dozens of events to celebrate the UK's only national festival of science - British Science Week.
The programme has events for people of all ages and interests including talks and activity days from March 13 to 22 around Aberdeen and more information can be found at www.abdn.ac.uk/engage/nsew and on Facebook.
All the RGU events are free to attend. For more information and to register for any of the events visit www.rgu.ac.uk/events
