King Charles is seeking permission from Aberdeenshire Council to turn Balmoral into a wedding venue for members of the public.

An application has been lodged, The Times reports, to convert the Queen's Building, which is just metres from the iconic castle itself, into a venue for marriages and other events.

The move would help pay for the estate's reported £3million annual upkeep.

The world-famous estate, which was the royals' private Scottish residence for more than 170 years, is a major tourist attraction, with guided tours and dinners reportedly netting approximately £500,000 from the around 75,000 visitors annually.

The licensing application lodged with the local authority seeks a “major variation” to the Queen’s Building, including changes to the layout and capacity and use of an outdoor patio.

Plans indicate the building, which is presently used for visitors and as a staff function room, would have its capacity increased from 250 to 277 people inside with space for an additional 144 outside, up from 40.

Papers also suggest events would be "rare" throughout the year.

It is now up to Aberdeenshire Council to decide whether or not to approve the King's plan.
