Ministers are being asked to consider a ban on pet cats in some areas of Scotland in a bid to protect wildlife.
The Scottish Animal Welfare Commission (SAWC), a body set up to advise the Scottish Government, has proposed the drastic measure.
Each year in the UK cats kill 27million birds, along with 250,000 bats.
And now, SAWC is calling for action to curb those numbers in areas where wildlife is most at risk.
Reports over the weekend suggest that other measures could include "cat containment areas" where pet cats would only be allowed outside if on a lead.
The charity Cat Protection has come out against the proposals, warning cats often provide companionship and comfort for elderly people and those with health conditions.
