ITI Group are partnering with National Gas Transmission on a project which will support the National Transmission System (NTS) to transition to hydrogen gas, CO2 or gas blends, and help achieve a Net Zero future for the UK.

The GB’s pipeline network and related infrastructure is currently set up for the distribution of methane (natural gas). National Gas Transmission (NGT) is investing in understanding the requirements and modifications needed to enable their network to transport net zero molecules through a programme called HyNTS. A new project, named SCADA Solutions for Hydrogen Networks, has been initiated to determine the optimum monitoring and control solution for the shift.

Alistair Carvell, Hydrogen Innovation Engineer at National Gas said: “Our goal is to ensure that we are ready for hydrogen, hydrogen blends and carbon in Great Britain's National Transmission System. We’re excited to be working with ITI Group to discover how innovative digital technology can help us achieve this goal. ITI Group has a wealth of experience in delivering control and automation solutions, and we look forward to working with them to help bring our nation’s gas transmission system one step closer to net zero operations.”

A mixed team of Subject Matter Experts from ITI Group’s Simulation, Control and Digitalisation divisions will investigate and define the requirements for a supervisory control system fit for the future. The consultation will provide NGT with a thorough analysis of their options and identify the most suitable route forward in achieving the envisioned future gas transmission landscape.

Chris Stones, ITI Group’s Sales Director for Energy, expressed his excitement about the collaboration: “This project is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to improve some of our most critical national infrastructure and ensure safe operability for many years to come. Investigating and guiding on a SCADA solution that is fit for the future of the grid and the transmission of net-zero gases in the form of hydrogen, CO2 and gas blends, has created huge interest and enthusiasm from the entire team, both at ITI and NGT. It is a truly innovative and forward-thinking endeavour.”
