An investigation has been launched into the Office for National Statistics (ONS) after concerns were raised about the accuracy of its data.

The ONS is the UK's official statistics agency and its data is relied upon to influence decisions at all levels of government affecting millions of people.

But the body has previously faced criticism from the Bank of England which questioned the accuracy of data it provided on the jobs market - figures the bank used to make decisions on interest rates.

The ONS will this week publish a new "strategic business plan" outlining how it will prioritise "key statistics and services".

The BBC reports the Cabinet Office and the UK Statistics Authority, which has oversight of the ONS, have asked Sir Robert Devereux to lead a review into the ONS to "assess the effectiveness" of it in "delivering its core statistics".

The ONS has said it looks forward to engaging with the review.
