Intertek, a leading Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide, is teaming up with Robert Gordon University (RGU) to help oil and gas companies make the most of big data.
Intertek is working with the Smart Data Technologies Centre at RGU to take their existing methodologies and toolsets, in terms of predictive analytics, to the next level - with the aim of improving asset performance, increase efficiencies, reduce operating costs and promote safe operation.
The project has received £50,000 of funding from The Data Lab – an innovation centre working to create value from data for Scotland.
It will provide powerful data science tools to support Intertek’s team in understanding the complex data patterns generated from sensors which monitor process operations. The ability to more precisely understand and predict plant operation as well as assist with failure investigations and root cause analysis will add significant value to their clients.
Colin Stewart, director Intertek Exploration & Production, said: “Intertek works with clients to provide solutions which deliver tangible results. Understanding real-time, digital data has become a challenge in the oil and gas industry, working with RGU on this project will help us see which data can best be utilised. Maximising value from data will have many positive benefits for our clients.”
Director of the Smart Data Technologies Centre at RGU, Professor John McCall, added: “Modern analytics can transform understanding of complex operations, providing management with the tools to realise huge benefits. We are delighted to be working on this exciting and challenging project with Intertek, which has the opportunity to achieve real impact on such an important area of the economy.”
Intertek combines measurement data with a highly skilled team of domain experts from a wide range of backgrounds - process engineering, reservoir evaluation, production optimisation, asset integrity management and fiscal measurement of hydrocarbons - to provide analyses of their clients’ operating assets.
