COREX was placed second in the IP100 league table, coming first amongst Scottish businesses and successfully achieving the highest ranked position within the Oil and Gas sector companies. The company was also the only company in the United Kingdom ranked within the top twenty of all categorised IP 100 League tables (Patent IP100 ranked 14th, Software IP100 ranked 20th, Brand and Reputation IP100 ranked joint 1st, Trade Secrets IP100 ranked 10th and Critical Databases ranked 4th).

Based in Aberdeen and Cairo, COREX is an international service provider of improved hydrocarbon recovery analytical services including formation damage analysis and simulation, enhanced oil recovery (EOR), improved oil recovery (IOR), core analysis, geological services and reservoir fluid analysis.

Operating in a competitive market place, and during a time of uncertainty and difficulties, COREX has built its business for over four decades on innovation, customer service and trade secrets. IP is fundamental to COREX’s continued growth and success, and something they are proud to lead in oil and gas, and on the international stage. COREX delivers services to a range of leading oil and gas clients including Shell, BP and Statoil amongst others.

COREX use a range of bespoke equipment to analyse core samples and simulate reservoir conditions. These technologies, assembled and customised in-house, allow analysis at high temperature and pressure so that results are representative of the operations that are being carried out in the field. COREX has the largest facility of its type in the world, where corrosion-resistant alloys are combined with high-specification pumps, pressure vessels, and monitoring systems in order to mimic a wide range of field conditions. Its analytical facilities including electron microscopy and high definition CT processing are used to understand results and provide context to clients. Internal software and databases are used to track projects, monitor staff development, schedule testing, and store results in a way that can be used as an interpretative and consultancy tool.

COREX’s current patents include a method of analysing reservoir rock to quantify and characterise changes from well operations for improved hydrocarbon recovery. These analyses include ultra high definition of the reservoir rocks, and the use of high tech apparatus to perform sand retention testing, a technique used to help operators ensure only oil and gas is produced and that reservoir rock and sand stays in place.

The patents registered further validate the testing and work that COREX performs, adding further quality checks to their outputs.

COREX Chairman, Graham Robertson said, “We are delighted by this award especially given the recent down turn in the Oil and Gas industry. COREX is committed to developing innovative ideas and solutions that help drive improved recovery factors and reduce risk for our loyal customer base. The experience COREX has gained over the past 40 years of trading is being used to find innovative solutions for our customers, who rely upon COREX to match this pioneering approach with a world leading service.”

Russell Borthwick, chief executive of Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce, said: “We are delighted at COREX’s recent success as it is through innovation and finding creative solution that Chamber members will continue to drive the economic growth of the region.”

The COREX ambition is to continue to develop and grow technologies for operators, and the team has plans to further enhance their IP portfolio and strengthen their position as a formation damage/hydrocarbon recovery world leader in the future and beyond.
