Family support charity Home-Start Aberdeen has launched an appeal for donations towards its annual book advent. The initiative encourages parents to read a book with their children in the 25 days leading up to Christmas. This year’s appeal has got off to a flying start with Asda Aberdeen Beach coming on board as a collection point and an initial donation of 1000 books from Scottish Book Trust.
“We are delighted to be partnering with Asda Aberdeen Beach for our 2015 book advent,” says Robert Eunson, chairperson, Home-Start Aberdeen. “Having a collection point at this busy superstore raises the profile of our appeal and will hopefully swell the volume of book donations.
“Last year, we wrapped and distributed over 2025 second-hand children’s books so that more than 80 of the families we support could participate in this positive project. We are therefore very grateful to Scottish Book Trust, who have kick-started this year’s campaign with a donation of 1000 books.”
Home-Start Aberdeen provides vulnerable local families with emotional and practical support in their own homes. The charity’s team of home visiting volunteers work with referred families to help them access relevant health and welfare services, manage family budgets and nutrition, engage with their own communities and enjoy family life again. Reading together encourages families to bond, as well as helping with literacy, communication and imaginative skills.
“Asda Aberdeen Beach is pleased to be working with Home-Start Aberdeen on the charity's book advent,” says Erin Campbell, community life champion, Asda Aberdeen Beach. “We hope to continue to support their work in the future."
Donations of good-quality second-hand books can be dropped off at Asda Aberdeen Beach and at Home-Start Aberdeen’s charity shop at 101 George Street – opposite John Lewis – up until Wednesday, November 11, 2015.
