The construction team behind the £17million revamp of Union Street have revealed the hidden obstacles uncovered during their work so far.
Engineers working on the project have encountered a 10m underground manhole, old tram wires, and more than 20 clusters of undocumented utility pipes and cables.
Despite the project being in the works for some time, the materials were “previously undocumented on any maps or diagrams”.
Among the items discovered under Union Street was cast iron piping
The overhaul of the historic Granite Mile has already been delayed from the autumn of 2025 to spring next year, but Morrisons Construction Infrastructure (MCI), who are carrying out the works, said the delays have been "unavoidable."
Experts will now be required to visit the site to determine whether the cables and pipes were still redundant.
MCI construction manager Rod Buchan said: "Despite the challenges presented by these unexpected underground discoveries, the team remains committed to delivering the much-needed upgrades to Union Street Central."
Workers also dug up power cables from Aberdeen's old tram network
Hub North Scotland project director, John Edwards added: “The project team went to great efforts before works started to determine what lay beneath the ground.
“However, there is always a possibility of finding these uncharted obstructions which can be incredibly frustrating for the site team and can have an impact on progress.
“The team continue to work hard to minimise that for the shops and businesses.”
