Aberdeen-based charity Befriend a Child is calling on people across the North-east to take on the 50th Celebration Inferno Firewalk Challenge this March in honour of the charity’s 50th anniversary.

The fiery event, taking place at Ardoe House Hotel, will challenge participants to walk barefoot across embers blazing at 500°C, symbolising resilience, strength, and the power of community. This daring feat aims to raise funds for local children and young people living in difficult life circumstances across Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire.

For 50 years, Befriend a Child has been turning frowns upside down, bringing joy and support to children in need.

The charity supports over 250 children annually, matching them with trained volunteer befrienders and mentors who provide friendship, stability, and fun. Befriend a Child relies completely on grants and support from the community to ensure they can continue providing their vital services and currently have more than 45 children on their waiting list.

Sarah Misra, CEO at Befriend a Child, said: “The 50th Celebration Inferno Firewalk is a thrilling way to step outside your comfort zone while making a meaningful difference in the lives of children and young people. This year is extra special as we celebrate our 50th anniversary and five decades of friendships. We’re excited to welcome all participants, whose support will ensure we continue our vital work in the community.”

The event takes place on Friday, March 7 2025, and is sure to take the chill out of the cold March air and keep participants on their toes. Firewalkers will be guided through a motivational workshop where they will mentally prepare for the challenge and receive their safety briefing from Firewalk Scotland.

Entrants are asked to pay a £25 registration fee to cover the costs of the event and raise a minimum of £150 in sponsorship.

Jenna Simpson, fundraising coordinator at Befriend a Child, said: "The event marks a special occasion as we celebrate our 50th year, and we hope to see many individuals and teams stepping up to take on this empowering challenge. It’s a really exciting experience, and we encourage everyone to join us for this unforgettable challenge, whether you’re looking for a personal challenge, a unique team-building experience, or a way to give back, this event is one you won’t want to miss.”
