Keen runners will be joined by trick or treaters at Hazlehead Park this Halloween, as charity group the Friends of Hazlehead announce the Dandara 5k and family fun day will take place on Saturday, October 31.
Organised by the Friends of Hazlehead and Sport Aberdeen, there are around 1,300 spaces for youngsters and adults at the Dandara 5k, the 1k and 2k children's races and the 600m fun run.
The event which supports the rejuvenation of the much-loved Hazlehead Park in Aberdeen is suitable for runners of all abilities and promises a great day out for families, with participants being given the option to dress up for Halloween if they wish.
Money raised will contribute to ongoing development projects at the park, some of which are already underway thanks to funding from last year’s event, including the replanting of the Queen Mother Rose Garden, upgrading core paths, creating sign-posted running routes and renovating and improving the popular Pets’ Corner.
Donald Shaw, chairman of the Friends of Hazlehead, said: “Following the success of the first ever Dandara 5k and family fun day at Hazlehead park last year, we are thrilled to announce the date for the 2015 event.
“We are so fortunate to have this fantastic park in Aberdeen and this event is a great opportunity for runners of all ages and abilities to make the absolute most of this beautiful space and enjoy what we are sure will be a brilliant day out.
“Once again we are extremely grateful for Dandara’s sponsorship which enables us to organise the event and we are incredibly thankful for their support. We are also grateful to Sport Aberdeen who are helping us prepare for the day.”
Dandara's sales manager in Aberdeen, Peter Best, said: “We are very passionate about supporting our local community so we’re more than pleased to once again sponsor this fun and exciting day out. Friends of Hazlehead do a fantastic job of enhancing and improving the park so we hope to see runners of all ages and abilities signing up to take part.”
The starting gun will go off for the first race at 9.30am and the event will continue into the afternoon with catering and entertainment available for all the family. There will be a range of activities on offer for children, including outdoor sports equipment provided by Denis Law Street Sport, as well as some Halloween surprises.
This year organisers have introduced cash prizes with the first female and male winners of the 5k being awarded £100 with second and third place runners receiving trophies. The top three male and female runners in the children’s 1k and 2k races and the first boy and girl to complete the fun run will be presented trophies, and there will be additional spot prizes awarded for Halloween costumes.
