An Aberdeenshire rugby club is kicking off an exciting new chapter as it builds momentum towards its 50th anniversary.

Garioch RFC has experienced significant growth in recent years, now boasting 19 teams and a membership of around 800 supporters.

With a vision to establish itself as the pre-eminent rugby club in the north of Scotland, Garioch RFC recently announced a sponsorship deal with Mackie’s of Scotland, beginning a drive to enhance community ties and fund the expansion of its offering.

Looking towards the milestone anniversary in 2027, the club aims to reach 1,000 members and create a £1.6million community hub in Inverurie, serving not only rugby players, but a wider range of sports enthusiasts.

Kim Jamieson, operations manager at Garioch Rugby Club, said: “We are at a pivotal moment for the club, with so much energy and ambition driving us forward.

“The past few years has seen incredible growth, and with our 50th anniversary approaching in 2027, we are determined to solidify our position as a leading sports club in the area.

“The support from Mackie’s has played a key role in our journey so far, and we are excited about what lies ahead.”

A particular success story has been Garioch RFC’s U18 Boys team, which last year secured a league victory in partnership with Deeside RFC.

The team was able to wear its own, bespoke kit for the first time courtesy of Mackie’s sponsorship, fostering a stronger sense of identity and unity among players.

This team spirit has also helped nurture exceptional talent such as Daniel Shellard, who progressed through regional and national development squads to earn a place on the Scotland U18s team.

While completing his pathways, Daniel returned to his home club, taking his learnings, and helping the younger teams at Garioch RFC. His investment in the future generation of rugby exemplifies the community spirit and upward trajectory of the club, made possible through backing from local businesses like Mackie’s.

Stuart Common, managing director of Mackie’s of Scotland, said: “One of the values we hold dear at Mackie’s is supporting local communities and groups in any way we can. Garioch RFC has terrific ambition and is approaching a key milestone in its storied history.

“We are proud to support the Garioch RFC, and look forward to what will be an exciting few years for the rugby club.”

The club’s fundraising efforts are gaining pace, with a dedicated team working towards a series of events in the lead-up to the 50th anniversary.

Among the key upcoming occasions is Garioch’s annual rugby festival on 17th May 2025, which will welcome around 1,200 attendees and feature more than 500 young players in action.

Additionally, the club is playing a role in the upcoming Inverurie Pipe Band Championships on 29th June 2025, which is expected to attract more than 5,000 visitors. Plans are also in place for a major club dinner fundraiser towards the end of May.

Kim added: “The support from Mackie’s has been transformative, not just in providing financial backing but in reinforcing the club’s sense of purpose and ambition.

“This is just the beginning of an exciting journey, and we are actively seeking further investment and sponsorship to help us create an elite rugby environment where young players can thrive and reach their full potential.”

With its continued focus on development, Garioch RFC is determined to provide a strong and inclusive sporting environment within the local community. The new facility will serve as a hub for all community sports clubs, welcoming a diverse range of activities and ensuring that local athletes from various disciplines have a place to thrive.
