Collapsed Aberdeen engineering firm’s last ditch efforts revealed

The scale of last-ditch efforts to save Aberdeen engineering firm Belmar before its closure have been revealed.

Owned by the Ritchie family the business entered liquidation earlier this week with the loss of 48 jobs.

Just 18 months ago the firm took in energy industry veteran Mark Patterson and his firm Mansefield Investments in a bid to turn around the struggling business. But despite a determined effort, the once-thriving city firm has now closed, owing millions of pounds to creditors.

Aberdeen University: Cuts needed to save millions

The University of Aberdeen has announced it needs to make cuts in a bid to save millions of pounds.

The university said it had made progress on improving its financial position but needed to make more savings.

This will include stopping almost all staff recruitment and revisiting voluntary redundancies. The university said it was "regrettable but necessary".

Supermarket price war looms as Sainsbury's joins fight

Sainsbury's has forecast that shop profits will flatline or fall in the coming year as the supermarket sector prepares for a possible price war.

The retailer said it expects income to dip to £1bn as it continues to invest in lowering grocery prices.

Last week, Tesco admitted that it could take a significant hit if it is forced to cut prices after Asda - now under the leadership of industry veteran Allan Leighton - announced it would reduce grocery costs to boost the struggling store.

Google has illegal advertising monopoly, judge rules

A US judge has ruled tech giant Google has a monopoly in online advertising technology.

The US Department of Justice, along with 17 US states, sued Google, arguing the tech giant was illegally dominating the technology which determines which adverts should be placed online and where.

This is the second antitrust case Google has lost in a year, after it was ruled the company also had a monopoly on online search.
