Robert Gordon University (RGU) will mark World Mental Health Day with their latest monthly movie showing, aimed at raising awareness and reducing the stigma around mental health issues.
The World Mental Health Organisation recognises World Mental Health Day on October 10 every year, describing it as an opportunity to “mobilise efforts in support of mental health.”
RGU lecturers Scott Macpherson and Dan Warrender have been working to aid discussion around mental health year-round through their Mental Health Movie Monthly programme.
The initiative features the screening of a variety of movies with mental health related themes, followed by discussions led by the lecturers. The free screenings are open to staff, students and members of the public, all of whom are encouraged to join in.
This month will see the showing of ‘It’s Such a Beautiful Day’.
Dan Warrender, lecturer in mental health, said: “We are both big film fans and believe that film can be the perfect launching pad for lively discussions. We decided to run with our interest and identify relevant films to encourage people to think about these issues.
“The overall response to the Mental Health Movie Monthly programme has been very positive since it launched in May and we would like to thank everyone who has taken part so far.”
Scott Macpherson said: “We know that there can be a reluctance to talk about mental health and so we’re providing an open platform for connecting and increasing awareness in the community.
“Our main hope is that this will help reduce stigma around mental health issues and encourage a more positive and understanding approach. Ultimately that can only improve the lives of those with mental health difficulties and society as a whole.”
Mental Health Movie Monthly’s showing of ‘It’s Such a Beautiful Day’ will take place in N242, Sir Ian Wood Building and will begin at 5:00pm on Monday October 10.
