Celebrities including controversial comedian Frankie Boyle have joined a campaign against the Rosebank oilfield development off Shetland.
A legal challenge against the oilfield, which is around 80 miles off the coast of the Shetland Islands, is set to be heard later this month.
And now Boyle, along with conservationist Chris Packham and author Naomi Klein, has given his backing to the bid to stop the project, The Times reports.
Rosebank was previously approved by the Conservative government in 2023, which caused concern about its environmental impact.
However, with the UK set to require oil and gas well into 2050 and beyond, there is a strong case for future production in the North Sea, where emissions are lower than many other international basins.
The project is expected to create £8.5billion in direct investment, with £6.6billion of that going to UK businesses.
It is also expected to create 2,000 jobs during development and support 525 jobs during the field's lifetime.
After a legal challenge, the new Labour government accepted the previous approval was unlawful and a court of session hearing with developers Equinor and Ithaca Energy is set to take place next week.
