Former first minister Humza Yousaf has announced his intention to step down as an MSP at the next election.

Mr Yousaf made the announcement on social media, stating he "could never have imagined the incredible political journey" he had been on.

In his resignation letter to now first minister John Swinney, the 39-year-old father explained he was stepping away from politics in order to focus on family life.

He said: "When one chapter begins to close, you often spend time reflecting on your achievements, mistakes and even regrets, I have all three.

"However, I hope that throughout it all, I was able to treat people with kindness, courtesy and respect.

"Since standing down from the frontbenches, I have, for the first time attended my children's sports day, parents' evening, and today will be going to my daughter's Christmas Show.

"I look forward to many more firsts as a father over the coming months and years.

"Thank you for all of the support that you have shown me over the years."

Mr Yousaf, who has served as an MSP for 15 years, will continue in the role until 2026 when he will not stand for re-election.
