Events are being held across Aberdeen this week where people can find out more about recycling their waste.
Aberdeen City Council is also lighting up the north pocket garden at Marischal College to highlight Recycle Week, which runs from September 25 to October 1, which is the annual UK-wide campaign to raise awareness of the importance of recycling. Zero Waste Scotland is encouraging people and households from across the country to become waste warriors and do their bit by recycling as much as they can.
The events being held in Aberdeen include:
- Wednesday, September 27 - the recycling team will be at S Nicholas Square with the recycling bus from 10am to 2.30pm to speak to members of the public to promote recycling;
- Thursday, September 28 - members of the team will be at Heathryburn Primary and to talk to pupils about recycling;
- Friday, September 29 to Sunday, October 1 - Zero Waste Scotland will have a stall at the Scottish home show where people will be able to ask questions and find out lots of information about recycling in Aberdeen and Scotland.
Over the last few months, Aberdeen residents have experienced big changes to their waste and recycling service. This has included receiving a new bin for general waste and new collection dates, as well as being able to recycle a wider range of materials, including plastic pots, tubs and trays, and food and drink cartons.
Almost all properties in Aberdeen now have a mixed recycling service which is easier and more convenient to use and enables the council to collect more materials.
The recycling collected goes to the city’s new Materials Recycling Facility at Altens East where it is sorted before being sent for reprocessing. This facility is expected to recycle upwards of 12,000 tonnes of Aberdeen’s mixed recyclables every year, helping the city to meet Scottish Government recycling and recovery targets.
Aberdeen City Council zero waste management sub committee convener Councillor Philip Bell said: “The recycling rate has increased since the introduction of the new service and it’s been fantastic to see how the people of the city have embraced this exciting and easier new way of dealing with your household recycling.
“As part of Recycle Week, we would like to thank residents for recycling their waste and would encourage anyone with any questions to go along to the events being held throughout the city.
“We have a target of zero waste to be sent to landfill which has been set nationally so we are happy to help people to help us achieve this.”
