A new music class in Aberdeen will use colours, shapes and cutting edge technology to allow youngsters with additional support needs (ASN) to gain a deeper understanding of music.
The workshops have been created by Aberdeen Performing Arts and Drake Music Scotland, the country’s leading organisation providing music making opportunities for people with disabilities. The class will take place in the Music Hall’s Tutti Studio on Wednesdays from 6-7pm, starting on Wednesday, January 29. They are aimed at ages 10yrs and over, but there is flexibility.
Using the specially created Figurenotes notation as well as technologies such as Soundbeam and iPads, these interactive music sessions are specifically structured to ensure they are completely inclusive. Figurenotes is an easy to read alternative to standard musical notation using colours and shapes, meaning reading and performing music becomes much more accessible.
Lisa Mathieson, Aberdeen Performing Arts’ creative learning manager said: “The highly trained team will create a relaxed, informal environment to deliver a fun, engaging programme which will respond to the individual talents and abilities of the participants.
“We are thrilled to be working with the amazing Drake Music Scotland to deliver this pioneering programme in the Music Hall. We hope that we can make the venue, and the arts, somewhere everyone can play and feels at home.”
The new term begins on Wednesday, January 29, with further classes taking place throughout the school year, and the next term beginning in May.
