The current trends in technology that enhance human reality will be explored by a computing science expert at a public lecture in Aberdeen this month.
Patrik Holt, a research professor from Robert Gordon University’s (RGU) School of Computing Science and Digital Media, will deliver a professorial lecture entitled ‘Augmented Reality: Enhancements or Hype’ on Wednesday, November 18 at the Garthdee campus.
The free event is the second in a new series of professorial lectures announced by RGU where a number of its experts discuss topical research issues.
Professor Holt leads RGU’s Cognitive Engineering Research Group, and for several decades has conducted industry focussed research on immersive virtual reality and augmented reality across a number of sectors including defence, oil and gas, and health.
In his lecture, Professor Holt will explore current trends in technology that allow us to augment human reality through visors, head-up displays, smart phones and tablets, as well as give a glimpse of where augmentation might be taking us in the short and long term.
Professor Holt, said: “Augmentation can mean to use technology to enhance human perception, thinking and problem solving but an important question asks whether these forms of augmentation really enhance humans or are they hype of limited use.
“I will explore and evaluate the value of enhancement technology using current trends as examples and will attempt to provide an insight to the future of augmented human reality.”
Patrik Holt is a Professor of Computing Science, specialising in Cognitive Engineering. He is a computer scientist with a background in Experimental Cognitive Psychology, Statistical Modelling and Cognitive Science.
His research interests look at human factors in engineering as well as augmented and virtual reality; human computer interaction and user interface design; usability and user experience; and visualisation of complex data.
Professor Holt’s lecture will begin at 6pm at the Sir Ian Wood Building located at RGU’s Garthdee campus. There will be an opportunity for discussion led by questions and answers, which will be followed by light refreshments.
