A new ‘Technical Support Group’ aimed at drilling and well engineers at all levels has been formed for those who are finding the job market extremely challenging as the decline in the oil price has taken effect on multiple organisations.

The Technical Support Group, which was formed by senior drilling engineer, Kristian Hannah, meets on a weekly basis and their primary focus is on the key components and subjects that will keep their individual skills, sharp and up to date. They share detailed technical knowledge as they discuss a variety of topics ranging from casing design, torque and drag calculations, mud, tools, well control procedures, both on planning as well as operations. The group comprises of drilling and well engineers at different stages of their careers, from different countries and who have worked all over the world for different operators and service companies. This is one of the key things that makes this group unique as they can each bring their different experiences and knowledge but more importantly they are not all searching for the same job.

One of the key objectives for the group was to ensure that the like-minded individuals could collaborate in a professional business environment to allow them to work in a quiet and confidential space. Prodrill Energy Resource Solutions were only delighted to help support the group after picking up on the team’s initial requests for a space to meet. After a few conversations both parties agreed to the use of the recruitment specialist’s Boardroom in Aberdeen’s West End, free of charge.

During the weekly workshops Drew Alexander, Prodrill’s operations manager regularly informs the group of current market conditions, recruitment opportunities, as well as offering guidance on how to get across their individual skills, experience and values all of which will help secure job interviews and future career opportunities in the marketplace.

Kristian Hanna commented: “You have a choice to sit and home isolated and allow your knowledge to get rusty or you can be pro-active. This was one of the key reasons I wanted to create a ‘technical support group’ for drilling engineers to meet face-to-face in Aberdeen. This helps keep the mind active, sharing in depth technical know-how and keeping individuals focused on the industry and the requirements of the sector so we are well positioned and prepared for job interviews and hopefully the next career move. The group is learning from one another at every workshop, we utilize books of reference as well as various websites for information and we even hand out our own homework assignments for the following week! So when the opportunity arises for an interview the interviewer will identify immediately that the engineer has been pro-active and kept up to date with their skills”.

These weekly technical workshops are highly motivational, informative and very worthwhile as brainstorming ideas and sharing knowledge is itself inspiring and stimulating. If you are a drilling/ well engineer and would like to benefit from this innovative, pro-active technical support group, please contact Drew Alexander via email or on 01224 261920.
